There are two gorge walks within Mutawintji National Park, this one and the Homestead Gorge Walk. Mutawintji Gorge walk is approx 3.5km each way, and is a reasonably easy walk to do, especially the first few kilometres as it is reasonably flattish and easy to follow. It is a good idea to take water on both these walks as you will get pretty dry in the heat, and, you better like flies, because they are really going to love you the whole walk.
Park at the designated parking area, which is about 4-5kms from the camp ground, then follow the easy track across the usually dry creek bed and then start to follow the well-defined track. There are walking track markers spaced apart to help, but in reality, it is a very easy walking track to follow. On your walk in or out, you may see a LOT of feral goats, they are everywhere in this national park.
After a few KMs, you will start to follow the creek that flows out of the gorge, but still on a well defined walking track, eventually, you will need to drop into the creek bed and then look for the track, usually on the left side as you are walking in.
If you are in luck and you are keeping an eye out, you will see an overhang up on your left, this is where you can easily see aboriginal art. There are plenty of other places to see such art, but you would need to seek those out and this is the easiest and a good example to view. Continue up along the side of the creek, navigating through and around rocks, after rain, you may see the first waterholes full of water, we were lucky and they looked so inviting for a swim!
Continue on, picking your way up the creek wherever it appears to be easiest to do so, the side of the gorge get higher and start to close in becoming much more narrow and gorge-like.
It won't be long before you come to the second waterhole which is usually always got water in it, the day we were there, there had been rain so it was looking pretty brown, again, it looks deep and inviting for a swim. On the far side of the pool, the gorge narrows into a slot and disappears around some bends, really makes you wonder what is hiding up in there.
This pool is a great spot to sit and just take the serenity all in, well, until you hear the goats above you, watching you.
When you have had a dip and it is time to return, start back the same way you came.
